I’ve been in a huge art rut for the past year or so. I feel this constant low-level anxiety about wanting to make things, but I always shoot myself down before I take off. In recent years I’ve come to see myself as too old to be mediocre at drawing, which, let’s all agree, is bullshit and brains are dumb.
Yesterday I was organizing a bunch of old files on my computer and came across a folder of images from my old blog. For about 9 months straight I’d painted something EVERY day. Lots of them are garbage, but I stuck to it and learned a lot.
I’m going to keep trying. Yesterday I sat down and did this 20-minute study (reference photo). Can’t say as especially proud of how it turned out, but I’m proud I did it. Today, I did another one. I’ll keep trying tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, and the day after that.
